Apart from most trees and things that clump up very quickly, we put almost anything in pots (without too many problems.) For drama, think about foliage colour and texture, and not just flowers. It's easy to focus on the flowers, and end up with lots of mid-green foliage which looks quite bland.
Agapanthus and Eucomis (this pot is our biggest, about 4ft x 4ft)
Same pot during another year, with Phormium Cream Delight and California Poppy
Phormium Platts Black and Stipa tenuissima
Hakonechloa, Scleranthus Uniflorus and Cotinus
And finally, a mix of lots of things (Pittosporum, Sago palms, Calla lilly, Ajuga, Castor Oil plants and more)
I over winter my dahlias outside by waterproofing and fleecing the pots and it works well. Crocosmia do well in pots, for a bold summer display, petunias, nemesia (for the bees). Diascia (overwinters well), sunflowers, wallflowers, med herbs planted with lots of grit. Chard can be nice and colourful too.
Keenongreen I love the colours you have in your garden... I have some heuchera and pittosporum for maroon shades but nothing darker... Jacquimcmahon beautiful pots! I notice you have hydrangeas in pots... Yviestevie your pots are lush... I need to get some bigger pots but they're so expensive! Not to mention don't fit in my car! I need my garden more leafy and jungle like... Cannas I think. Watch this space
Thanks all for your responses so far. My plan is to keep updating this thread I'm case it's useful or interesting for anyone.
I've already done one brutal cut of the plants I have and am planning more! Asking *Does it spark a joy?*
I just have to build a shed and them I'll post pictures of how the garden looks at the moment. Please feel free to comment or pot anything at all on here especially if there's more peolek out there with a small pot garden of their own.
Hi @Treeface I'm glad that reference landed! I have over 30 pots in my garden, i'd need a removal van just for pots! But I am planning on scaling it back. Maybe I have the wrong pots or maybe I have the wrong things in pots but I'm not getting the effect I'm after.
