It definitely has the look of scarlet pimpernel. Really easy to pull out if it is. I let some grow here and there because I like it.
    In London. Keen but lazy.

Yes it could be a speedwell, Veronica serpifolia.  I first thought it was Veronica beccabunga, but the leaves are too small and it likes wet ground.

The wikipedia page for thyme-leaved speedwell says the latin name is Veronica serpyllifolia which is similar to what you called it. Are you saying it is another type of speedwell or just spelling the latin name differently?

If it is the thyme leaved speedwell then I have it in places in my own garden and find it difficult to weed out completely since it roots in numerous places along the low growing stems so when pulling up part of it there very often will be a small piece that remains behind and allows it to regrow.

Sorry, I got the name wrong, it should be serpyllifolia.

Gosh you guys are good!  I will have to go out in the morning and check when it’s light. It’s sounding like the thyme leaved speedwell more and more because of the way it roots too.  Will report back

I grow Brooklime in one of my ponds which looks similar and grows happily out of water and spreads quickly.

Bingo!  Based on all your descriptions it is a speedwell I believe.  Thank you all so much.  Now to tackle it.  My lawn has never looked worse after a winter!  Happy Gardening to you all and may the weather stay dry. For a while anyway!
