Tiny white insects

Hi, please can you help to identify these tiny white insects. Found them in soil in a border after taking out a geranium that had started to rot at root level. Geranium roots when cut open had a white fungus all the way through. Then I noticed the insects in soil. These were drawn to the surface by a potato half I placed on top of the soil. Can anyone advise me?

And the springtails have arrived because they've detected food (rotting roots) but are not the cause of the rotting.
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
  • I read somewhere it would draw the insects out (related to some nasty root eating things) and they could be captured or disposed with... Potato was presumably tastier than the rotted geraniums I'd dug out earlier. Of course now I know they're harmless so will cease squashing them lol!
