Malva Moschata & rust:

ElothirElothir Posts: 94
Just wondering what peoples experience has been with Musk Mallow and rust problems.

Some places basically seem to act like all Malvaceae are doomed to get rust and become ungrowable sooner or later while other places seem to suggest it's not really a major issue or that Musk Mallow is somehow less susceptible than some types.

Reason I ask is I've been debating getting some for awhile, but the only plant from that whole family we have ever grown is Hibiscus Syriacus and that has never had problems for us.

Same here.  I stopped growing hollyhocks for at least 10 years but tried again last year and they developed rust.  I grow m. moschata every year and have never had a problem with it.

    Thanks for the answers.

Sounds like it is probably a case of the internet blowing everything out of proportion (as usual) then.

I can't grow any sort of malva because of rust. Love them, too!
  • I grew healthy pink musk mallow for years, they were everywhere.   About twenty years ago I bought a posh mallow from an open garden I had visited,  and since that time I am unable to grow the mallows as they suffer dreadfully from rust.  I miss their beauty, and every now and then allow a few to grow in case the rust disappears.  Last year I though it had gone and I allowed lots to fill my borders, a beautiful sight .... then rust appeared again.
