    Gypsum?  That is often added to clay soil to help break it up.  The previous gardener may have stored some in that spot.
    Thanks to everyone. Looking at the pictures provided by Ben I think that it is almost certainly Gypsum, as Rik and Bob suggested.

    Given the concentration, it certainly seems that it was a storage location (or a split bag as suggested by Lizzie).
