We inherited this enormous Bay Leaf plant, but we're not sure if it's edible or not. I know some are toxic and unsuitable for cooking.

It certainly looks like a bay tree.

Have you picked a leaf off, crushed it in your fingers and sniffed it?

Bay tree leaves are pleasant smelling.
Yes 100% sure it's a Bay and a crushed leaf smells really lovely, we're just not sure if it's a variety that's safe to use for cooking as some are toxic.

Laurus nobilis (Bay laurel) is the edible/culinary bay and  fine for cooking.

There are other laurels that are not edible, but Bay laurel is fine.

I have that one, slightly frilly edged leaves,  always using the leaves much nicer than the dried ones you can buy, and apart from that, we have blackbirds nesting in it every year.
