Lots of lovely new roses! @Victoria Sponge I'm really keen to see how your 'Leda' gets on. Its one I dithered about for quite  while! @Tack I also had quite a dither over 'Dioressence' too so looking forward to seeing that one next year!

@Nollie They are selling it as 100cm stem on their website but it is actually 110cm to the first graft and 120cm total to the top of the stem. Taller than expected.
I think there are only two grafts but I am not sure, the top one could be two close to each other. It is well developed, the grafts are already enlarged with many canes from them and well branched. I paid 14 Euros for it.

I’ve got a question regarding the TLC roses.. are they grafted or own root? I’m curious as why they’re so much more economical than the roses we get in the UK..

Also.. with regards to moving roses from the ground.. what’s the success rate like with their transplantions once they’re established.. ? Furthermore does the success rate go down the more established they are, say comparing a rose that’s been in the ground for 2-3 years vs those that has been there for 10+ years?
  • I nearly bought Dioressence last year I think, @Tack and @iaincd. I've wanted a lilac rose for a while but still haven't bought one so there's a few roses on here I'm taking a special interest in, including Chartreuse de Parme as it's on my pink list.

Ref Leda, yes a bit of a luxury purchase as I now have more than half a dozen once flowering roses or unlikely repeaters and my garden is only small/suburban size.

That is tall, @edhelka. Even if only two grafted roses, still incredible value, especially since they don’t charge extra for postage. Mme. Ernest Piard is also sold by Loubert, but no mention of fragrance, which implies it doesn’t have any: https://www.pepiniere-rosesloubert.com/catalogue,3/mme-ernest-piard,992172.html

@celcius_kkw all their roses are grafted. I guess the prices reflect economies of scale, roses are generally cheaper in Europe, but TCL beats the lot.

An email this morning tells me my TCL roses were dispatched to the courier at 01:15. They must be really busy if they working through the night!

  • My order from Cants roses ordered 22nd November came today. Two "Sparkle" HT roses, orange colour and have fragrance ( saw them a couple of years ago at an agricultural show where Cants had a display)
Well packed. So what do you think of the quality?
Plus as this is my first attempt at bare roots, have I done right soaking them in rain water before planting?

@purplerallim . They look fine to me and yes, it's considered good practice to soak bare roots for an hour before planting. Enjoy your roses.

  • I want to give them the best start, so soil rather than compost, but what else? (They are going into tubs for the patio)Thanks for any suggestions. 😁

If you've got some manure or your own home-made compost, then I would mix a shovel full of that in with the soil to give them a boost when they start growing in the Spring.
