@Mr. Vine Eye I still remember how gorgeous your Malvern Hills was this year from the photos you posted!
My favourite this year has to be Desdemona, I planted it late summer last year and this is it’s debut year really. All the buds flowered at the same time so it created a lovely display. To top it off, it smells wonderful too!
By the way, I have news for you all - I have now acquired a half allotment plot (!!!) and I’m super excited - I have been searching for more space to grow things as my rooftop garden is now completely stuffed with roses.
Here is a picture of the plot
I intend to grow one climbing rose along the fence to the right (apologies for the cropped shot, I took this in a rush during the short viewing) - I will be training the rose laterally (with the rose in the middle of that fence) and allow the canes to fan out on either side. Do you all have any good suggestion in terms of variety? Although I am a very scent driven person I think this is slightly less important as the aim is to create a visual impact and to cheer up whoever walks past my plot - I’m thinking of something bright red.
I have also been debating about whether I should grow some roses at this plot but I don’t think they could be easily moved once established in the ground.. this is likely to be a temporary plot for the next couple of years. Probably not worth the investment..?
@celcius_kkw - congratulations! I remember you asking about plots earlier in the year. I’m definitely glad we got one after the year we’ve had. Given us space to have a pond for one thing.
what have you got on yours? Looks in much better state weed-wise than what we ended up with!
@sarinka Gosh! You’ve lasted much longer than I have! That said, the fact that I found an available plot was a complete chance.. I’d been trying lots of allotment sites since May and none had an available plot. I came across this one randomly after somebody at work told me about it.(well after I’ve been telling every soul I come across that I’m looking for one)
@Mr. Vine Eye That’s what the lovely lady told me during the viewing! I suppose I was originally imagining a fully manicured plot with beautifully coiffured raised beds waiting for me to sink my plants in., haha! But I’m up for the challenge, and I think it’s all part of the fun to clear up some weeds and create new beds. I’ve been reading about no dig beds too, I shall save that for a different thread before I take this off tangent.
Congrats Celcius! A winter of dreaming ahead! It looks in good shape compared to many. No six foot bramble jungle to tame first. Any history of horsetail?
...thanks for the input regarding our best performing roses this year.. always good to learn from these things.. ...Adrian,.. nice patch of land, exciting for you.. do I understand it's only for 2 years? you wouldn't want to put a lot of work in would you?
..happy to hear the progress, no worries about posting here..
I had a -3 last night... and it's only +1 now.. but it's decent winter chill for roses as it's been way too mild, and it's defoliated some of them, which is good.. For those growing 'Francis Dubreuil' next year.. it's still in full leaf with buds.
@celcius_kkw Congrats on your plot! Regarding roses, you could go for somewhere with a smaller outlay, in case you can’t bring them with you, like TCL. Could be a good trial garden for the future.
@celcius_kkw, congrats on the new venture which will be great fun and hard work! It's quite possible to get hold of less expensive roses as I found in 2018 (5 for £15) just to make the plot look pretty if that's your aim. I've been pleasantly surprised with mine although they are unnamed ones and have no fragance. Probably two disadvantages for you.
I found the longest cane from Bathsheba on the ground this morning, snapped off. Wasn't bad wind or anything so can only assume a cat jumped down on it or something. I've cut it into three sections and potted them.
Can't resist the urge to propagate plants even when there's nowhere to put them!
