I concur with @newbie77's remarks @Marlorena, I enjoy reading your insights and I'm sorry people are disrespectful and arrogant to you by PM.
I like your ragged-look Desdemona @celcius_kkw. I'd like a couple more DA and have often looked at that one, but I think this year will be my last big order after reclaiming ground from my building work so the contenders are having to meet strict criteria.
Today I ordered two from TCL, thanks for the tip off @Nollie to get Lady Emma Hamilton from that supplier. I found another rose I wanted there, Fellowship, an orange Floribunda which reduced over all cost despite postage.
Editing to add about Burgundy Ice, I've taken to giving it a half dose liquid feed every other week as I am doing to another rose that is genuinely poorly, Evelyn Fison but that was mostly caused by poor husbandry whereas I'd describe BI as 'languid'. It's put on about a foot of nice new growth however it does only have one good leg at the moment, the other canes have died back.
Your 'Soul' is a spitting image of an Austin called 'Thomas a Becket' I would hardly know the difference from that picture..
That's very interesting comment. I have Soul as well, but it's a very young rose, so no doing much, not like yours, Omori's, in term of bush growth although I got more flowers. Bloom is beautiful, but is almost fainting in the heat, before burning. But I'm sure it will get better next year. However, I'm planning to buy Thomas a Becket and plant it no far away from Soul. I know Thomas can be quite a beast, but the same can be said about Soul, but I have been toying with the idea to have both for so long so i'm going to risk it, that they will be too similar;) I guess Soul should have bigger flowers, but Thomas should have more.
Boscobel, being treated for chlorosis...I hope I can manage this better next year:
Deep Secret, in the rain:
Any Gaura fans, I really like this plant:
Edited to add...does anyone find Astrantia smelly, I’ve been hesitant to buy it because of this, but I took the plunge as I couldn’t resist this colour. In the morning to me it smells like nothing, just now (4pm, cool/rainy) it smells lightly sweet with a very faint funky background.
This one is called Sparkling Stars Red, and I should have said the Gaura is called Geyser White.
Your roses, guys, are looking so healthy and nice, I'm going to spend some time reading the whole thread back to get a secret. Mine are getting the black spot already and a rust (yes I know, I'm not spraying them), and some of them, esp the older lots, suffer from chlorosis, and nothing helps, and in this weather I have not choice of watering them with tap water;)
@evelin I’ve been using Maxicrop seaweed + sequestered iron to battle my problems with chlorosis and it seems to be working, just took longer than I was anticipating. Have you tried this one?
Dear @Marlorena Just to echo what others have said: I for one, as a complete rose novice, have been very grateful for the generous way you share your knowledge, experience and expertise. You are completely entitled to step back and have some time to yourself! Best wishes.
I am also very appreciative of the positive approach taken on this thread - even though I have inadequate gardening skills!
@Marloena, I wholeheartedly agree with what Piano Player says above. My roses have looked so much better since following your advice - I just wish I'd written it all down at the time so I had it to hand in the future!
@Nollie, that frazzled rose looks awful, I've never ever seen one like that before. Solely down to your much hotter temperatures perhaps? Will you complain to the grower? I must admit I'm beginning to rethink my planting here with a view to removing anything that needs constant watering or fussing over. I think our climate's just going to get hotter and wetter unfortunately.
Sorry to hear your Astronomia is not doing so well, @edhelka. It is fascinating to see how roses respond so differently to climate, soil and planting position, I wonder what the problem is with that spot of yours.
I’m glad to hear you got LEH @Victoria Sponge. Sounds as if I better get my order in soon with TCL!
@Lizzie27, the Chateau seems a healthy enough plant, just those horrible burnt blooms. I wonder if it’s just a delicate flower, other potted roses I have ordered in the past have been fine planted out in hotter weather than this. I will give it some time and see what the next blooms are like before getting on my high horse!
Edited to say about Soul, it could be that it is responding to nitrogen more than the other newbies, in a new, very enriched bed, thus growing so much in it’s first year at the expense of blooms and also why the canes are more pliable. I didn’t think I would be doing much training in the first year but thought I better had start getting all that growth tied in! Perhaps I should experiment and not feed it next spring to see if that encourages more blooms...
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
I went out hoping there's a gap in the rain but nope. I took this photo of Empereur Charles IV. and quickly went back in.
Astronomia has some nice new growth, I hope she will outgrow her slow start eventually. But out of 27 roses new to me this year, there have to be some winners and some losers. Luckily, I am happy with most of them.
