Convallaria Majalis (lily of the valley) and Dicentra Spectabilis (bleeding heart) bare root plants.

I planted both Convallaria majalis (lily of the valley) and Dicentra Spectabilis (bleeding heart) bare root plants/pips last Autumn along the shadier side of my back garden.

Could anyone tell me when i should expect to see any sign of these plants appear?
There is no sign of either as yet, have i been a little impatient expecting some sign of growth? Or have they been lost to the winter wet? Any advice gratefully received.

Both will cope with plenty of wet, so that shouldn't be a problem.
Lily of the Valley doesn't appear here for about another month, but I noticed my white dicentras are growing away quite well [about 6 inches tall ]  as it's not been a proper winter here - they're not usually growing much until mid to end of March. They're mature plants though.

Yours may well be just getting established below ground though, so I wouldn't worry too much yet.  :)

Thank you @Fairygirl and @justandnobodyelse I was about to ask this exact question with respect to my bare root dicentra. It hadn't occurred to me how much work it has to do below ground first.
  • Thanks for the advice @Fairygirl I wont panic just yet then! Good luck with yours too @HidcoteHurrah
  • :) I think they are starting to show, How exciting!

Are the first three pics Lily of the valley?

And the final two Dicentra Spectabilis ?

They are not very big at this stage, but my first bare root plants look like they have made it! Could anyone kindly confirm that these are what I think they are? They are shooting from near my bamboo cane markers from last autumn.

Yup - they look like L of the V  :)

The other two could be dicentra, but they look a bit red. Are they pink varieties?
Mine are white, and the foliage is bright green. It's along time since I've grown any of the pink ones so I can't be sure.
Is all the foliage in the 2nd last pic belonging to the dicentra? Some of it doesn't look right.

I can confirm that the new shoots of my pink bleeding hearts are indeed red, they then green up as they grow :)
  • THank you both @Fairygirl and @fatsia for your advice. The bleeding hearts are a pink variety so all looks promising!

    That's great @Fatsia. It's a very long time since I've grown a pink one.
There was some other foliage there too that just didn't look quite right too, which was why I asked.
Glad they're all looking good for you @justandnobodyelse :)
