@Blue Onion I've replaced the elastic on 2 of the 4 masks I made for OH and shortened it on most of mine after my face got thinner. I do think the cheaper cotton dress fabric ones have worn less well than the patchwork fabric ones I made but those have a much tighter weave to begin with - more threads per inch.
Even so, 3 layers and a good fit is still better than the feeble flimsy disposable ones and netter for the environment too.
@raisingirl it's a big round number isn't it? For some reason I don't understand Belgium has a higher death rate per 100,000 of population.

Been using disposable masks with elastic round the ears but tried out the first of a new batch yesterday which has fabric loops. Didn't even dawn on me to try one out before I got the the shops - far too small for my big head. The loops were so tight they pulled my ears forward and my glasses kept slipping off

I think this might be partially attributable to the hugely international nature of Brussels - when people arrive from overseas they bring the virus with them. Also I believe Belgium includes in its Covid death statistics fatalities that would not be counted in many other countries. I wonder too if the Flanders/Wallonia schism and the impact that has on government with the endless and often unworkable coalitions is a third factor.
Yes @BenCotto. All that movement of people is certainly true given the headquarters of the EU, NATO, SHAPE, innumerable European headquarters for international lobbyists and global companies. September was always a bad month for colds when they all came back from hols bringing new bugs with them.
However, they have one of the best health services in the world and I'd have expected them to cope better because even if the central government is a bit dysfunctional, the federal bits deal with health and education and so on.

I wonder if we'll eventually be able to see a pattern. If we'll figure out why some people die and some barely get ill. And if that will tell us whether underlying factors meant the UK or Belgium would always have been hit hard, or if the choices of government have substantially changed the outcomes. The USA also has a lot of power vested in local authorities, able to largely disregard the central government if they chose to. Will that have changed their outcomes? Or will the politicisation of masks prove to have been the deciding factor? In Belgium, will it prove to have been the inability of the central government to get its act together which ultimately undermined the efforts of the federal administrations to keep the population safe?

One factor that must be pushing up the UK’s Covid death rate, and that of most European countries, in comparison to USA is that we are geographically more compact with excellent, fully used, public transport networks. Thus the population is much more mobile and the disease spreads.
