@Astro , My dahlias are potted in the greenhouse, but mainly under the bench. Old ones with huge plump tubers, I potted  into damp compost initially, but I don't start watering until I see signs of growth. The new ones are shrivelled up specimens, so they went in small pots that I gave a good watering, let them drain, then I won't water again until I see growth.  There is an electric heater, but it is on a thermostat to just keep frost out, so most heat they get is what the sun produces during the day.

I use these small bud vases, anything can go in them, no need for long stems. I don't grow flowers for cutting, it always feels like they look better in the garden than in a vase but I occasionally cut some and have them in the kitchen. I will have cosmos and several plants in pots this year which will be good for an occasional mini arrangement like this.

I know Gladioli are unfashionable, but for anyone who does like them, LIDL have bags of some unusual sorts in at the moment. I added a couple of bags of Gladioli Coral Frizzle to my basket yesterday.
