As long as we don’t buy a bag of compost with peat in it,  all will be well in the world.

Maybe mindless vandalism is the answer?

Sentences like this always make me laugh ,the next generation always seem to think they’ve invented it and the generation before them knows nothing of it.
Of course we were all protesting about something or other back when we were their age.

“Tracy Mullaghan, 45, a retired school nurse from Milton Keynes: said: “To save our environment we have to try and understand how we’ve got into the position where we’ve known for nearly four decades that the way we live our lives has an impact on the world.”

... 8000 tonnes of plastic compost bags goes to landfill - including the peat free bags. I wonder for how many that's a consideration when buying it?

I used to be concerned about the non-recyclable plastics, but I recently found out that our non-recyclable waste doesn't go to landfill - it goes here, where anything that can be recycled is, and the rest goes into either compost or fuel. So I don't feel so bad about putting compost bags and suchlike in the bin, although they do get at least one other use first (storing homemade compost, using as bin bags, cut up for hanging basket liners etc).

Such a shame this conversation has resorted to whataboutery and irony. Avoiding peat is an easy change we can all make, it's up to us to make that choice. Of course when it comes to solving the climate emergency it requires international collaboration and major institutional changes. But that doesn't mean our daily actions don't help improve the situation. It's really that simple. You can keep trying to rationalise your own inaction all you like. But you are part of the problem by refusing to acknowledge that we can all help steer businesses to a more responsible future. By not buying their environmentally damaging products and putting pressure for change.
    Good post.
