Gophers Damaging Your Plants

Initially when planting trees and vegetables, I did not realize that there is a huge problem of Gophers in my area.

Many of the trees that I planted were completely destroyed as the Gophers ate their roots without any visible signs on top.

To prevent this from happening, I started to make a galvanized steel mesh cage, bury it in the ground, and plant the tree in it. This resolved the problem and the trees are doing well.

Still have issues with squirrels though.

Gophers are not a problem in the UK where most members of this forum garden, nor here in France where I and a few others have our gardens.

Does make it interesting, finding out what others have to deal with. They sound a bit like furry vine weevils, causing damage underground with no obvious problem on the top.

    Nope,no gophers here.

Though it’s sometimes pleasant to find a gofer.
Some parts of the UK have problems with invasive golfers damaging habitats.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

Which reminds me of a favourite headstone, no doubt put up by a wife pleased to be shot of him: ‘Beneath this sod lies another.’

I hope you aren't put off by the wacky British sense of humour  :)

...I think that's all you can do really... they eat rose roots too, but I don't think you grow roses?... I know Gophers are a big problem for some rose growers in California... I think they are cute to look at but I wouldn't want them in my garden, no more than I would rattlesnakes...
...great to see your garden projects ...

I've had serious Gopher problems with my roses also.

Just a few photos of my rose varieties.
