Hi all. many thanks for your invinvaluableal input! The majority seem to favour the 'grow it on' approach, so i think i will plump for that, as our soil is generally shallow topsoil over chalk, so isn't brilliant (although improving), and there is lots of change taking place in the garden, so i can't give them the attention that planting direct would demand.

Hi joyce goldenlilly. Well, we have a huge juniper horizontalis that i was thinking of covering. Or failing that, an old trellis that divides us from our neighbours greenhouse containing his plastic collection, which is getting on around 10m long. It is only a low trellis, but i wonder if the montana can self-support to a degree to buy a foot or two of extra height.
