stag beetle grubs

An old apple tree that was in our lawn has fallen over been rotten for 3 years the top feel off previously. I pulled the root out and inside was what I think are stag beetle grubs. Reading on here the stay in the ground for years. How best can I try and keep them alive.

I would push the root back over them and leave them to it.

You could make a feature of it ... grow a herbaceous (non climbing) type of clematis over it ... very pretty

I would take Dove's route

I they live on the rotten root so make sure there is some left still in the ground for them.
