Two years ago I managed to acquire a 6x8 ft greenhouse for free on freecycle. I was lucky enough to have the help of my daughter and son in law, plus an anonymous friend of theirs who loaned a trailer, to move it to my garden. Last winter I lost half the glass to a storm but now have put lots of extra clips in and so far it has survived the non stop storms we have had this winter. My garden is fairly high up so takes a battering from Westerly storms. I had it put onto brieze blocks on soil and this winter have used spent ash from my fire to make a level base inside, topped with weed matting. It is not in pristine condition, I have to tie the roof vent to a paving slab inside to stop it blowing open as the catch is missing, but it serves its purpose for me. I have laid paving slabs inside to walk on, also have put 4 small square pavers under the feet of the aluminium staging bench to keep it level. Totaling up what I have had to spend on it I could probably have bought a new one but I am a sucker for a freebie.I use unwanted large white lace curtains draped over the top and sides as shading which looks rather elegant and works really well. I just hook the curtains onto the corners of the frame, at the end of the summer I take them down, put them through the washing machine and put them away until the following Spring. It is fairly common to see 6x8 greenhouses advertised for sale for £25.00 down here, I was lucky to get mine for free, and it was very near where I live which helped. It is very true that no matter what size greenhouse you have, you always wish you had a bigger one. I no longer have to fight through a forest of tomato plants in my conservatory but am on the watch for another free 6x8 so I can grow my cucumbers separate from the tomatoes despite my daughter saying they would never move another greenhouse for me!
Hey Joyce, sounds like you are made of far sterner stuff than I am!!! I have today ordered a Rhino 8x10 so am looking forward to taking delivery of that late in March, but we have only 10 days from now to prepare the base as my husband then heads abroad for work until after the delivery date! I need to choose some paving slabs asap! EEK!!!
We bought a Robinson's greenhouse from Greenhouses Direct. So far it has been great, but I wouldn't buy hexagonal again, too difficult to find staging and shelving to fit it. We built a central base of brick/paving slabs, with some drainage/soil pockets at either end, into which we can plant tomatoes, etc. The greenhouse itself is sat on a railway sleeper base. This was it halfway through being built.
I can understand the problems you might have with a hexagonal greenhouse but they are very attractive and it looks like you have a lovely area around it, what does it look like now? Apart from wet!
We have a Rhino 12x8 and its great. Good air circulation and has survived he wind this year. Side vents & auto roof vents
That is good to hear, I am excited to get started though doesn't look like we will get it installed until the end of April as apparently a busy time for greenhouse purchasing! I will need to figure out when I can start some seeds off indoors ready for the inaugural opening of the glasshouse!
