Growing Garlic in water

I've seen some videos on Youtube about how to grow Garlic in water (similar to how you grown indoor Hyacinth's).  Are there any advantages to this, versus planting direct outdoors?  We will be planting our Garlic in Spring, at the allotment.

    No, and it won't work. All you will get is a few green leaves then it will exhaust the resources in the clove and die. Hyacinths are using up stored resources in the bulb to flower that way. Also for most types of garlic you are rather late to plant them, they should be planted in the Autumn as they require a period of cold to stimulate them to make a bulb of cloves, if you plant too late you will get a harvest but it will be smaller than it could be an will probably consist of bulbs that have not split into cloves.

    I guess it would be possible to grow garlic in "water" but you would need to buy hydroponic nutrients and in all likely-hood provide additional lighting if you were to do it inside.
