Grasses recommendations

Hello, I’ve got a section of garden planted with Rudbeckias and verbena and I’d like to have some grasses planted with them.

Ive seen clumps of compact, in terms of width, but relatively tall grasses in gardens but not known the names. Can anyone recommend any good varieties that don’t get too wide, or can be easily kept narrow, but medium height 3-4ft?

Thank you

Originating from Nepal , I can thoroughly recommend Calamagrostis emodensis .
It slowly spreads , but is easily divided .
Clumps attain approx. 2' tall ; fresh green foliage and beautiful feathery plumes reminiscent of some Miscanthus spp.
You may need to contact a specialist nursery though ; I've never seen it available in garden centres .

..these are some of my favourites... I find they all go well with late roses, asters and rudbeckias...

Pennisetum 'Fairy Tails', quite beautiful and perfect for your purposes.. July onwards..
Calamagrostis brachytricha [Korean Feather Grass] this does seed about but worth it.
Achnatherum [Stipa] Calamagrostis.. 3 foot, graceful, airy.. autumn foliage colour..
Miscanthus 'Ghana'... this grows to 4 foot, the flower plumes turn bolt upright and the foliage turns bright red in autumn..  [this is a shorter plant than the much used Calamagrostis 'Karl Foerster' grass..]

Pennisetum alopecuroides 'Cassians Choice'.. the earliest to flower of this group, early August onwards.. foliage turns bright buff, almost white throughout winter.. and is a feature in itself..

  • Miscanthus Kleine Fontaine and deschampsia cespitosa are both glorious.
    DC tolerates part shade.
