How to tell is it root rot?

My beautiful fiddle leaf got brown spots after a year being all fine, I have looked at roots and soil is a bit moist but I haven’t changed my watering timings, just not sure how to tell is it roots? Or under watering?

    That compost looks really dry to me.
    In London. Keen but lazy.

    I agree. I think the compost could be full of dry air pockets. 

    I would fill a large container with water and immerse the entire rootball and pot in the water ... my guess it will bubble as the water replaces the air. When the bubbling stops remove the pot and place it somewhere to drain. 

    It is better to give the plant a good soak rather than watering little and often.

    But the dark spots like this seems to normally happen with root rot, just been very careful of not over water as fiddle leafs are so fussy

    Just make sure the compost drains well after watering. 

    The bottom half of the compost looks damp while the top is dry ... looks as if it’s been sitting in a saucer/or pot of stagnant water rather than draining after watering.
