Good morning, The gale force winds in wonderful Wales has just taken out and smashed my rose arch!! fortunately the Mermaid rose which I only planted a year ago was undamaged.  Any advice? It is around 3 feet tall and flowered well last year. If I planted it in a large pot, would it be ok where it is with an structure in the pot? The ground has got very wet this Winter here and the Arch posts came out easily even though it was well secured in the ground. any help much appreciated. Many thanks.

    Mermaid is very very vigorous ... my daughter has one planted against her garden shed (double garage size) ... Mermaid has covered it ... it has designs on the car repair workshop in the yard behind ... she lives in a dodgy area of the town ... police fully expect to find ne'er do wells dangling from its branches if they ever try to get over her back wall ... they say it's the best legal burglar deterrent they've seen.   Within eighteen months you won't be able to find any rose arch underneath it ... it's an incredibly beautiful monster ... love it but it needs lots and lots of space.

    As @Dovefromabove says, it's a beast " up to 30ft "
    I'd take the opportunity to plant to somewhere more appropriate.

    Oh WOW!!! I have got a problem haven't I!!!  Thanks for the advice, you people never disappoint and you made me laugh a lot today! I will do as you recommend with the rose. I saw it in Monet's garden in France and loved it. I guess I can now start building the bridge and putting the waterlilies in the pond before I get my paints out!! Have a good day.

    The one my daughter has was dug up from my previous garden ... it spent some weeks being neglected in a dustbin before she made a space in the rubble of the yard that she has turned into a lovely garden but which was then just a tip.  Mermaid is tough as old boots so dig it up and move it ... somewhere ...  :D
