Badly pruned rambler

ive inherited a large rambler , possibly Rambling Rector, Which has been badly pruned meaning there are now a lot of stems that have reverted to wild . Can I restore the plant by taking these right back to the main stems ?

    Do you mean sucksrs, coming out of the base? I don't think upper growth can revert. A picture would help.

    if it is Rambling Rector, they're hugely vigorous and are best left to their own devices scrambling up a big tree, for example

    When it flowers show us some photos and we'll probably be able to suss out what's happening and what needs to be done ... if anything  :)

    They're awfully hard to kill. It took me about 3 years! I don't think it produced any suckers in that time.
