PROPOGATING ROSES

Last November when my husband began to clear our shrub filled border to make a base for a summerhouse I quickly ran out to save 2 much loved roses. One is a Paul's Scarlet and the other is Golden Showers. I took lots of cuttings from both and stuck them into a pot of compost and them set them aside. (I remembered seeing Allan Titchmarsh do this) Both are now showing signs of new leafy growth but I don't what to do next. Please advise. Thanks.

From Nov 2019 it is unlikely they have good roots yet. Leave them until roots start to show through the bottom of the pot. Then after leaves have dropped next autumn, transplant to final position.  (if it was Nov 2018, tip them out and have a look at the root system. A good root system means you can transplant them.)
  • To propogate groundcover roses, wondering what to "pin down" a groundcover rose section with (would rocks crush it? Is there something better? before I cover the rose with compost.

A metal peg is best - can be a bit of old wire coat hanger bent to shape or a tent peg or a U peg for holding down garden textiles such as weed membrane.
