Squirrels and Magnolia Bush

Having stopped as far as I can the squirrels getting to the bird feeders.

Now they are eating the new buds on the Magnolia bush.

Grey squirrels love magnolia buds, I'm sure this problem has come up in the past with various solutions involving guns, live traps and chilli powder (not necessarily all at the same time). Seriously though, l don't think there is a lot you can do to prevent it without using drastic measures.

I have had problems in the past with grey squirrels nicking apples.  It stopped when I hung bags of coal tar soap in the tree branches - apparently they don’t like the smell.  I used the net bags that supermarket garlic bulbs come in.  Worth a try.
