Mangetout - just curious

Whilst preparing some SM mangetout, I noticed that each pod had a little white root growing out of it. What's it for?

I presume it’s the remnant of the pistil, the female part of the pea flower.

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
