Out of bounds fig trees

jamesholtjamesholt Posts: 593
my fig trees are growing crazy. I need to prune them and corral them.  I didn't realize how big and fast they would grow.  How much can I or should cut?  I just read it is recommended to put a stop around them?

It depends on your soil and climate as to whether or not you need a stop.   Here in the Vendée they are grown in the ground and fruit well.  Having said that, the birds nick all the fruit from ours just before it gets ripe enough for us to eat so we've planted a new on in the veg plot and it will be caged so we get the fruits.

In the UK, where the warm period is shorter, they need to be provoked into fruiting or they'll just grow bigger and bigger and not bother fruiting.

Have a read of this info from the RHS - https://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/profile?pid=106

These trees had two large crops last year.  Only the ants bothered the fruits but after adding diatomaceous earth to the base the issue was gone

In that case they're clearly happy and you need to be gentle with them.
