The street tree we're looking after is doing well. I wish that the council, instead of just plonking them in the ground, would attach a sign saying 'please water your tree' and pointing out what the plastic tube is for. People might then feel ownership of them.
Several young trees further down the road are dead. What a waste!

@Loxley I'm fairly sure it is Thomas Edison, that picture makes it look a lot less purple and more pink. I also don't take more than half the shoots off the tuber because I am not that interested in achieving fewer but massive blooms.
Thanks, I did wonder if it was Thomas Edison but like you say, it looks paler in the photo.

The council's contractor ought to be watering them, but yes it would be a great idea to encourage people to take care of their neighbourhood trees. Perhaps before they were planting, they ought to consult with the people living there, and that might encourage some sense of ownership? OTOH they might be asked to plant 'Flamingo Trees' or not to plant trees at all ("I don't want to be cleaning bits of my car!")

@AnniD - I was only remarking yesterday that some of trees have lost their bright green and the flowers I associate with September are out in force.

Yes. We have had this problem locally. Many young replacement cherries died for lack of water. It helps if the neighbours right by the tree commit to water it.

I suppose the assumption is that the council will do it. A sign might remind people that they need to take some responsibility for their own environment.

Better comms would really help, but it's hard in a bureaucracy. We have really strong res assocations by me and it's still v hard to get the message out to make specifics happen. It's best to have a cast iron commitment from a small group of people. A local gardening group or community garden might be best to connect with to make it happen. Vague messages often just disappear into the void.
