Lavender in afternoon sun?

Hello everyone,

We are currently throwing around ideas for our front garden. We would like to incorporate some lavender. The problem is we only get the sun there I'm the mid-afternoon/evening. Ordinarily I would think lavender is a no-go but we currently have a large rosemary bush bush and other sun loving flowers have done ok too. I don't want to waste money/plants so wanted to consult the experts!

Thank you.

A lot will depend on the type of soil you have, @Purpleandpinks.  I wouldn't get away with lavender here at all, though it's mild enough, because the soil is heavy clay and drains poorly.  If you have light, sandy soil and not too much winter wet, you may be ok even if the area doesn't get full sun.
Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.
  • @Liriodendron thank you. I'm on the Essex/Suffolk border so a dry and mostly sunny area with mild winters. I have a lavender hedge in my back garden which has been successful in its first year so that's encouraging!

Stick with varieties suited to British conditions, eg Hidcote and Munstead Dwarf - and it should be fine.
