Miner’s lettuce

Hello all. I have ordered seeds of Miner’s lettuce (Claytonia Perfoliata) and am looking forward to trying it out. Has anyone grown it? Good experience with it? Am wondering if it will grow well in an east facing border and when to sow. Any tips appreciated!

I haven’t  grown it but there’s a good article here in the GW site

Have three lots of it at present. One lives in the kitchen window while other two recover in the greenhouse. Quite prolific and tasty. These ones were self set but came up late autumn I think.
  • @Forester Pete does it continue to produce leaves through the winter?
  • Thanks for the link @Lyn seems like it can be sown from spring through to September, good news.
  • Yes it crops through the winter. I haven't grown for a few years but until spring probably. I have always had them in containers of some sort but they carry on inside of out.

I have the pink flowered variety and it flourishes in my garden, in fact it can become a bit of a pest in some areas but it has a lovely flavour when added to a green salad.

  • @Ladybird4 I didn’t know it came in pink too. I don’t mind too much if it spreads. Do the slugs like it by the way? They are a big problem in my garden so growing lettuce can be a challenge...🙄

Oddly enough, the slugs - which I have loads of - do not seem to like my version (Claytonia sibirica) but I cannot say if that applies to other members of this family.

  • I really hope they don’t like my version either. I had to resort to growing other lettuces in my window boxes to keep out of reach of the army of slugs!

I didn't know you could eat the pretty pink one, @Ladybird4.  I'll give it a go...
Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.
