hello,

i have a hornbeam hedge that needs pruning. Can I do it now or is it best to wait until September like everywhere says!

thanks in advance

I would do it now (before the birds start nesting) ... it’ll need doing again in September 😊

Great, so guessing that won’t affect the new growth in spring?

It’ll be fine ... and it will stimulate lots of new side shoots so it’ll help to thicken the hedge up.  But trimming beech and hornbeam in early September is important ... it’s this that stimulates the growth of the new leaves  which turn that glorious golden bronze colour and are retained by the hedge in the winter. 😊
