  • Ok thanks @Obelixx we’ll see how well butternut performs for me. Certainly seems to do well at the urban farm up the road.

@RedSquirrelAbroad My last garden was 50kms south of Brussels near Gembloux.   As long as the fruits get plenty of sun on them and you make sure the plants don't go thirsty they'll be fine.   Give them a generous dollop of well-rotted manure if you can, once established, and/or feed with tomato fertiliser which promotes flowers and fruits.

  • Thanks @Obelixx as I absolutely love butternut squash soup I hope they do well! It’s a matter of squeezing them in as garden isn’t huge but I can probably stick in a trellis for them to grow up near the veg patch.

Or you could just buy them from Delhaize or Colruyt.

They don't like the cold so if you can't keep them warm enough, wait till mid April.  They need plenty of light too to grow strong and sturdy.  Pot on and plant out mid to late Lay.

  • We grow our butternut squash on the ground.  When the squash are of a good size we place slates or something that is thin under the squash to keep them off the ground - which helps to stop them rotting during a wet summer and keeps the creepy crawlies away from them too.

Has anyone here tried squashkins? I believe that they are a Butternut squash/pumpkin hybrid.
