Fritillaria Persica planting advice

Hi, I bought 12 FP bulbs a few years ago. They all came up and looked amazing, but I only got one year out of them. Bought some more just now, as they were substantially reduced, as I know it’s a risk. 
Checking growing conditions, it says well drained soil and full sun. To be honest that’s what the first batch got, though maybe it was too dry, the area tends to bake a bit in summer. 
Has anyone grown these and they definitely come back? Maybe it’s too cold for them here? Any thoughts on how I can keep these going?

    Try planting them on their side.  They have a hollow top which can collect water and cause the bulb to rot.  Planting them sideways reduces this risk.  You could also try planting them in plastic pots and keeping them frost free over winter.  When they show shoots, plunge them in the border where you want them and then lift once the flowers fade so you can care for them in their pots as they die down and then store them somewhere suitably dry.

    That’s a good idea about the pots, will try that. Thanks Obelixx. 
    It’s unclear though, about frost, as advice says needs a period of cold.
