Other than remove the damaged or diseased leaves - I take off large green leaves and just leave fresh young ones on.
Suggest that you read all previous comments...it all depends on which Helleborus it is. There are many wonderful species of Hellebores..one rule does not apply to all of them.
Below are a examples of ones I would not trim just now.
I have read conflicting reports on cutting off the leaves of Helleborus niger or not. I much prefer to display the flowers on my X hybrids and like the look of the bare flowers on my niger now I have cut the leaves off. Does anyone know the logic of why people say you shouldn't with niger? Also, have I damaged or potentially killed mine by cutting the leaves off? 😂😵😭
H.niger tend to die if you remove the leaves. There is no need to do it with the hybrids, but people tend to, because the leaves get disease, which can kill the plant. If the leaves are fine you can leave them and naturally that will lead to stronger plants.
How can you lie there and think of England When you don't even know who's in the team
Whoops. Too late. I'll see how it goes 😂 We'll, they look nice for now. Thankfully I got them as two litre pots for £2 each. There is quite a bit online suggesting it's ok but maybe I shouldn't believe everything I read online 🙂
Hope I am ok asking for an ID on these Hellebore plants just bought (rescued) from the supermarket. Labelled as Christmas Rose I think they are H. foetidus and H. argutifolius. Can anyone please confirm? Thank you.
Niger need their foliage as @punkdoc says. I only remove foliage on the other types if it looks really rough, or is compromising the flowers themselves. It's usually the hybrid types that people remove foliage from so that they can see the flowers better.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
Hopefully as there's a few smaller leaves left they may survive. There's two chances! At least if they do, the foliage will be nice and fresh. Lesson learned. I hope with less than total cost. The flowers look nice though for now.
