Palm tree advice

Hello!
I was hoping someone might be able to give me some advice about a palm tree in our garden. The tree was looking a bit sorry for itself when we moved in over the summer, particularly compared to those in other gardens- generally a lack of green leaves. Now it looks quite a bit worse, with only a few green leaves left and mostly dead leaves falling off. A photo is attached. We haven't done anything to the tree and it does take a bit of battering from the wind (we live by the coast in Cornwall). Is there anything we can do to help it out?

    it's neither a palm , nor a tree, it's cordyline australis, sometimes called cabbage palm, ( clearly it's not a cabbage either lol ) 
    They shed the older leaves, don't fret about it unless we get REALLY cold weather.
    It'll be fine , honest.  :D

    no problem. we all live and learn. We never stop learning.
    TBH Common names don't help us much sometimes, just add to the confusion. 
    If you look at others around you, you'll see they're all pretty similar to yours.

    It is possible to protect the leaves of palms ( even non-palms ) by putting a shading hat round it, same as they use in nurseries to prevent leaf burn in summer and it serves the same purpose, just protects it from wind. I remember how windy Cornwall can get. Cabbage palms will usually survive in mild areas of Britain.
