Caterpillars in winter?

I was raking up some rotting fig tree leaves from the half frozen garden this morning and was surprised to see two bright green caterpillars working on the underside of one...can caterpillars survive at 0°C?  Or are they out of season and not long of this earth?

    Many species of butterflies and moths spend the winter as caterpillars, others as eggs, others as pupae, others as adults.

    lots of wildlife can be found under leaves in winter. Be kind to them and leave the leaves

    I found a wooly bear caterpillar under a pot in the greenhouse earlier. There's been loads of them about this year.
    If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

    We have hairy black caterpillars wandering along our patio almost daily at the moment.  They certainly are out late in the year.  I can't recall seeing them so late in other years.
