Bluebell identification

Can you can you identify Spanish bluebells/English bluebells from the bulb? I have been given some bulbs and they are quite large, about 2cm across, and I thought English bluebells were quite small bulbs. I don’t want to plant them if the are Spanish variety.

I'd say the bigger the bulb , the more likely to be Spanish.
The trouble is , they hybridise very readily, so it's not just black and white, there are lots of shades of grey between them now.

I wouldn't risk it, they're much more likely to be Spanish bluebells. I think even the English types can be a pain unless you have a huge woodland garden for them to naturalise in.

  • I'm pretty sure my bulbs are smaller than that, but even though they have been in for years I'm still not sure of their parentage. They grow with bells on one side but don't  bend over much. So maybe try them in pots this year and if you are happy with them plant them out next year. 🙂
