parakeets

in Wildlife gardening
I heard rumours about these birds, but didn't believe it until now. I wondered why I was refilling my bird feeders quicker than usual and looked out and saw these parakeets.
Are they a pest and are they interfering with other birds?

    The jury is out on whether they pose a problem with native birds. 
    Husband had them where he lived in Surrey, but they're spreading outwards all the time.

    There's a flock of them in one of the Glasgow parks. They fly overhead here now and again, and visited my feeders last week. 
    Not sure how often that'll happen - it's a wee bit chillier here than in the town, so it may only be an odd visit. 


    I think a lot of towns will see them, and see a rise in numbers - they seem to be a real nuisance in many areas in the south.
    It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

    I just looked it up and the general consensus is that an aviary blow down in Surrey in the storms of 87 and they are spreading fast, but no one can be sure of any impact on other birds. To see them after hearing about them was exciting and the kids loved seeing them. Would be interesting to see a map of where they are being spotted.

    I know they have been seen in Sheffield, although not by me.

    Some say Jimmy Hendrix released some in Hyde Park , back in the day, and that was the start of it.

    The ones here were in captivity and then escaped - or were released.

    The RSPB map is interesting as it suggests they are migratory within the UK.

    I've seen quite a big flock of them in Wollaton Park, Nottingham.
    "What is hateful to you, do not do to your neighbour".
