Again - not sure. I think if you spoke to anyone who has been victim of 'unpleasant gossip' - even just sit and think about some of the 'innocents' caught up in the stuff after Savile - then it is not trivial - far, far from it (try googling 'suicides after savile false accusations'). But again that's getting away from the question somewhat.

I may be wrong but I don't recall any of them inviting the press/media to their houses to do interviews. The most egregious cases were those who were arrested and never charged but A hasn't even been spoken to by authorities. I have a great deal of sympathy for members of the general public who have been caught up in the media witch hunt frenzies. They don't have any experience or advisors to help them.

But I was referring to your abstract case - being accused of hiding or even fencing stolen goods doesn't carry the same opprobrium as paedophilia.

I think you're missing the central point. You can't make a general rule for 'people' and then apply it to the Royal Family. They may like to think of themselves as being the same as the rest of us. They are not and different rules will always apply to them. This isn't the first time A's personal misjudgements have ended up pushing a general election off the front pages, he should have known better. If he really HAD to do his interview, he should have waited until after December 12th. That would be a complete irrelevance to anyone who isn't Royal but it is paramount for them.

  • ....  Also, why do some beetroots slough their skins easily after cooking whilst others don't?
I noticed the other day that  the skin of some beetroots which seemed not to have been stored well had begun to dry and shrivel slightly. The skins were very difficult to remove after cooking.

In France, Black Friday, such as it is, is next weekend tho there is talk of abandoning it.  Odd, because I only noticed it last year for the first time and it applies to none of our purchasing tho this year, OH did have a car viewing booked at a big showroom - now cancelled as life has intervened.

I have the last of the beetroot crop awaiting inspiration - 8 or 9 of them.  Every recipe used so far involves peeling them first so no awkward skins.   One of my favourite recipes is for beetroot and butter beans baked ina cream and horseradish sauce with a toasty oat and cheese gratin.

Can't get butter beans here, either dried or in tins.
