    You can plant spring flowering bulbs in the area you've mulched if you want a bit of spring colour as those don't really compete with the tree which will be dormant when they do their stuff. :)
    A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

    Sounds like a plan Bob.  The article on the apple rot was really helpful.. Hopefully next year's harvest can be salvaged
