Bird Friendly Garlands

I know, I know....not Christmas yet, but I like to plan ahead for projects for our little helpers.
I would like to decorate our Juniper trees in the front yard this year. I trimmed them back in early summer to get the traditional 'tree' shape.
Stocking up for supplies, it occurred to me that an edible garland for the birds might be a good project for the kids.
Some of the ideas I have are:
  • Dehydrated orange slices
  • Cranberries
  • Dried apple slices
  • Pine cones dipped in peanut butter and pressed into birdseed
  • 'Birdseed ornaments' (formed into Christmas shapes)
  • Dried Starfruit slices
Ruled out:
  • Popcorn-would just melt away in damp conditions
Anybody have any additional suggestions for materials?

It's a lovely idea @HouseFinch. You will need to tell the kids that it will look very tatty after a week or so once the birds eat all the goodies. I made one once for the front door and put berries and seeds in it, it looked very sorry for its self after a few days.  :o

I'm not sure they'll go for dried lemon slices and so on but festive fat balls with fruits, nuts and seeds will be appreciated.

  • You could even mix in a bit of vegetable dye to get coloured ones :)
