What went wrong?

My first attempt to grow fennel seemed successful as it grew to 4/5 feet tall with beautiful green tops but when I harvested it I found a long hard root below the ground ( almost like a parsnip) instead of a succulent fennel bulb. What went wrong?

It sounds as if you sowed herb fennel rather than
Florence Fennel, which is the vegetable type.

Either that or your plant suffered from drought.

Thank you all for such prompt and correct answers. I have indeed planted herb fennel instead of Florence fennel. I now have a whole row of the wrong thing.  I live and learn but that’s what gardening is all about I believe

I love using herb fennel in the flower borders to give height without ‘weight’.
I’ve also planted a row of bronze herb fennel as a screen between the end of the veg patch and a quiet corner where I like to sit and read. It’s a great plant if used imaginatively. Love it. 😊

It's Friday - manners aren't applicable on Fridays - new forum rule :D
    Apologies SLH1 :)
Typical that I find this out just as it rolls over to Saturday :s
