For the past 4 years I have opened my small garden to visitors one day in June. I never considered that there might be an insurance problem!
Regarding contributing to charity this is what I did this year, for the first time. It was a real success.
About 70 plant plugs which were no longer needed in the garden were given away, duly labelled with planting instructions. Those plugs were free, of course, but visitors who took them away were invited to make a small contribution to a charity, viz. the Fédération pour la recherche sur le cerveau. At the end of the week-end all 70 plugs had been taken away and we had collected the sum of €77.40. As promised, I doubled that sum and forwarded a total of €155 to the FRC charity organization.

More details (and photographs of the event) on my garden site here: http://www.rezeau.org/wp-garden/en/152-visitors-in-papi-joes-garden/
