Allotment Research

Hi, I am a student from Loughborough University researching habits and general use of allotments. If you own an allotment I would be very grateful if you could complete my short survey below.

    Perhaps I'm being over-perniketty, but I don't think anyone owns their allotment, they are rented.

    Spelling is learned at school and by reading a lot.   About 40 years ago someone decided it was too boring to teach English grammar so a whole generation doesn't know how their language is constructed or why. 

    My daughter, mid 20s, hardly reads at all.  It's all DVD and downloaded films and text speak for her generation and she is only now starting to appreciate the joys of reading stories and will, I hope, absorb all sorts of lovely words and language.   She's bilingual and even in French they're dumbing down the grammar stuff

    She was educated in Wallonia, Belgium so a bit different but even here in France I see official things with English titles or puns.  Cheap rail travel is available in an SNCF branch called "Oui Go".   The ladies at patch have been muttering about simplified spellings and verb forms being officially adopted and general running down of standards and expectations in language teaching.

    Why is it that "old" people constantly want to diss the young?
    I never cease to be impressed by them, and when I compare them to me, at a similar age, they win hands down.

    I agree with you @punkdoc ... and anyway, it’s our generation that has been teaching the young after all. 

    Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

    I'm not dissing.  Just saying they don't have access to proper grammar and language teaching in most schools now.   Not exactly their fault.   Certainly don't think students today are thicker than our generation.   They do have different skill sets which has to be a good thing.

    Ah, now that explains why I've never understood grammar! Or, at least I'm using that as my excuse from now on  :D  

    @bethgrimmer, there's St Ann's allotments in Nottingham. Have you tried contacting them? I think they have a facebook page & are quite active.

    Some of the comments on here highlight the ongoing ignorance displayed by a certain generation.

    Todays students have a far broader knowledge than anyone over 40 could ever have dreamed of, and deficiency in spelling is down to your generation.  For it is you that taught them.

    when you are all perfectly educated, error free and all knowing, then and only then, should you feel justified to spout your ill judged comments.

    I disagree that the young are just tomorrow's old, I think that they will be very different from todays old.

    Said she putting a small "e" on English!

    When I worked for a software house in the 80s, they discovered I could write proper English so, in order to help with selling their skills to customers like Microsoft, IBM, oracle etc, I got lumbered with re-writing all the CVs of the incredibly gifted techies who could write operating systems and design intricate software with their eyes closed but not construct a clear sentence.  Some brains are just wired differently from others.
