Rowan growing out of post!

I have recently discovered a tiny rowan shoot growing out of a wooden fence post in my garden. It's likely this fence post will be removed and I wondered if it would be possible to save this rowan. Could I cut the shoot and plant it in a container?

Any advice greatly appreciated :)

Yes - but ideally, you need to remove it with it's roots. It's unlikely to grow if you just cut off the shoot I'm afraid.

You'll need its roots so just cut off the bit of post with them in and plant that in a container to see how it does and then out in teh garden if it survives..

  • Thanks Fairygirl and Obelixx - I will take your advice and try and get the roots. We've just had another rowan tree in our garden fall and would love to try and save this tiny shoot. Many thanks

They're more than tough, so good luck. It should survive no probs  :)

I've transplanted them from gate posts before now with about a 50% success rate. Easier to do in the spring just before they start to come into leaf and get as much root as possible. One of my has topped 10' now.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.
