Good morning, I have just received 3 dozen Delphinium plugs. It is about 12 degrees this morning! Can anyone advise? Is it too late to plant them out? Many thanks.

I'd keep them sheltered until Spring

I’d pot them up ... top them with coarse grit and keep them in a cold frame over winter ... plant out when they’ve made decent sized plants in the spring.  If you plant them out now the slugs will have them.

The slugs will find them in a cold frame too so make sure you use some garlic spray and/or wildlife friendly slug pellets andmaybe put them on a bed of very gritty sand or coffee grounds.

  • Thank you, I decided to plant them in troughs and pots and keep them in my unheated Summer House. Lots of natural light , no heat. no slugs. I will keep a check on them every day. I did it with lots of seeds last year and all were fine and germinated.
Many thanks for your advice everyone. I had not thought  of the slugs!!!
