    To each his own, but I'm not a fan of cutting them back hard in the growing season. IMHO it weakens them as the loss of leaves = no ability to make food from sunshine.

  • @Hostafan1 agreed, I would not either was just taking off the dead. Our season is just about over here. There’s bound to be a hard frost by Halloween. Would you recommend cutting back after that?

    I never "cut" mine back. ( I've got over 1,500 plants ) If the foliage comes away easily with a tug, I remove it, if not, I leave it until it's ready to come away easily.

    I do exactly the same ... wandering around the garden in the wintry sunshine, pulling a few spent hosta leaves is one of my winter gardening pleasures 🌞 

    Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
