Musa in a pot

Can anyone advise me on how to over winter my Musa please. It was quite small when I bought it earlier this year, it's now about a metre tall. It will definitely need repotting next year. I was thinking to cut it back and store it in the shed, would that suffice or will it need wrapping up also?

Thera re ways to ct it back to prevent moisture getting to teh centre and rotting it.  It will probably need wrapping too with some fleece and maybe hessian after that but that depends on how cold your shed gets in heavy frosts.

Have a read of this info from the RHS on pruning back for winter and protecting one planted outside then adpat wrapping according to your shed conditions - https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/articles/wisley/protecting-bananas-over-winter

  • My advice would be to cut the leaves off and bring it in the house. it needs to be frost free to survive. The leaves will grow back next year so don't worry about taking them off. I've got about half a dozen in my hallway which doesn't go down well with the rest of the family.

If it's Musa Basjoo, it's about the hardiest . I bought a small one this year and I'm going to dig it up and stick it into the unheated polytunnel for the winter, but I'm not wrapping it up.

... Going back a few years but one of the presenters on GW produced actual Bananas in his polytunnel.  Can't remember his name - youngish chap ( at that time ), had a pony tail and pretty sure he was in East Anglia somewhere.
I'm sure I haven't dreamed this but can anyone confirm ?

Bob Flowerdew?  Lives not far from here ... buys some, but not all, of his bananas in our local W'rose  ;)
