"The ability to dismiss certain annoying/unpleasant/of no interest threads would be handy though"

This is what i'm aiming at..... have a look at notification preferences.  Consider changing preferences as below.   Then only bookmark those discussions you are interested in.   More importantly un-bookmark them when you are no longer interested or things get nasty and "Out Of Hand" etc.

You'll need to bookmark the discussions you started yourself too!!  If you don't then you'll not be notified when someone adds to the discusion you started!!

Presumably you can bookmark a discusion that you "did not start" and "are not participating in" but want to follow and be kept notified of new posts.... Not tested this but i'm sure that this is the case.

You'll get fewer popup notifications and fewer email notifications, you can stop notifications for discussions for whatever reason, and re-bookmark them if you change your mind.

So having started this discussion i have bookmarked it so that i get notifications.  I can choose to un-bookmark it therefore stopping future notifications even though i started the discussion.

Hi CC, I was meaning dismissing the ones that just appear on the list of threads, that I hadn’t bookmarked or set any notification for. For example, a thread appears that says, ‘Shall we have a laugh at other people’s expense’. I don’t like this form of humour and I don’t want to see the thread listed every time I look in recent discussions so I want to press a button to dismiss it, so I don't see it appear again on my screen.

  • I understand Hollie.   It would seem that this isn't possible.   This discussion i was hoping would be about being more selective about notifications either by email or by popup.

I recently participated in a discussion that "In My Opinion" went both "Off Topic" and got very Nasty and i was finding alot of email notifications about the discusion i was no longer interested in.

I wanted to explore ways of stopping the notifications for this discussion.   I have worked out that it's possible to be very selective about what i recieve notifications for and stop and start them.

Thought i would share this with others who perhaps don't want to recieve notifications about a discussion that's gone astray for whatever reason.

This discussion wasn't initially about "Dismissing Threads" and was starting to go "Off Topic".

This discussion "Which i started" and therefore could possibly recieve notifications about updates potentially forever.    Having changed my notification preferences i could now un-bookmark this discussion so that i no longer recieve future notifications even though i started it..... If it should go tooooooo far "Off Topic" or go pear shaped.

I am no longer recieving email notifications for the discussion i participated in that has gone nasty, a much lighter mail inbox and i'm no longer reminded of the discussion or tempted to participate or read ongoing disagreements between other forum members.

    Problem Resolved.

I don't opt for any notifications. Drives me mad  :D
It would certainly be handy if we could delete a thread when it's not of interest to us. Save a lot of scrolling.

Mind you - there's one I wish I could completely delete right now.... ;)

I only have email notifications for PMs.

I have pop ups for posts on threads I’ve started or bookmarked and if someone tags me.

    That’s enough for me.

"Notify me when my rank changes"
    What does this mean?

@Papi Jo there is a facility on the forum for us to be ‘ranked’ according to how many ‘Likes’ we get ... fortunately this facility has not been enabled 😀
