That sunny corner looks good for a raised bed under the stairs, the wall between the windows is the spot for a mini greenhouse.( anchor well to the wall)
At the bottom of the stairs is a good place for a little shed, for all the kids/gardening stuff.
We laid turf at this time of year as the company said it's the best time ( little green growth but lots of root growth ready for next year) and less watering needed, but you will have to stay off the lawn for most of the winter. Finding a dry day to prepare the soil and lay it maybe the problem though.
Lovely looking space to begin with.😁
  • Thanks @Fairygirl, @Astro and @Dovefromabove! So I can 'dig over' the whole plot now, build my raised beds ready for spring? in the top picture, they would be on the far right underneath the shorter red brick wall you can just see. Grass I will look for a shady variety. We'd also like a little shed/bike store and a tall tree where the black bin is in the second picture. Would a cherry tree work? Not sure about tomatoes, I was thinking more a couple of blueberry bushes, some kale and carrots - simple things for my toddler to grow and tend (they're age 2 and newborn) Maybe a raspberry climbing between the leftmost windows in the bottom pic (would they grow tall enough to cover the horrible holes?) and another (manageable) climber on the other side where the pipework is. Any advice on this? So grateful for all the replies, don't have anyone IRL that I can ask!
  • Oh @purplerallim I didn't see your response! Theres a little under stairs cupboard where the stairs meet the main building, so I cant really put stuff in that corner without losing access to the cupboard. I was thinking about keeping a little foldaway bistro set for sunny afternoon cups of tea (with all my spare time HA HA) and maybe a few kids things. We're also contemplating building a little climbing wall up the side of the steps for the kids.

Then the mini greenhouse to cover the holes is the best place. How about hanging baskets on the stairs wall ( before the little ones are big enough for the climbing) with cherry toms in next May. A raised bed doesn't have to be against a wall so can give access.
