Alocasia (elephant's ears)

What is the secret to keeping this plant alive.  I am usually very good with plants (indoor and outdoor) but two of these have gone yellow and died soon after I got them home.

    They love lots of water in the growing season, but dry over the winter months

    in " the wild " they go from monsoon ( wet ) season to the dry season.  I've seen them grow in flooded ditches in India which dry out completely in the dry season. 

    Some folk deliberately let them dry out totally at this time of year and remove compost and dry the bulb / tuber out completely ,then start again in Spring.

    That is what I will do this year, as they are now too large, to put into pots and bring indoors.
    I shall treat them like Dahlias.
